Recently, I had the opportunity to discuss and dissect the current debate about standardization on the Voices in Montessori podcast. In the episode, I discuss why our current drive to measure numerous minute “skills” is a modern invention, driven by the political and economic influence of neoliberalism. Furthermore, the entire system is designed to funnel profits to education testing companies, who were responsible for the Common Core State Standards and the (overblown) frenzy around “learning loss.” This history is highly documented but seldom discussed.
